Mantova Campus

Mantova Campus

In 1994, the Politecnico di Milano inaugurated a University Diploma course in Building Engineering in Mantova, followed in 1997 by a Degree Course in Architecture; these courses are part of an ambitious project to set up a network of decentralised campuses, with the aim of creating strong links with the Politecnico in places that, due to an abundance of cultural and production resources, are particularly significant and with which the university can cooperate towards overall development of the territory.
The Mantova Campus combines the values typical of belonging to the system of major traditional universities with the added value of also belonging to a specific area mainly characterised by the extraordinary value of its architectural and cultural heritage as well as the fact that it is located in a town with a high standard of living and ample capacity for hospitality.
Mantova and Sabbioneta have been listed by UNESCO as world heritage sites since 2008, a recognition that has led to a growing awareness of and attention to their historical built heritage.
Partly in relation to this, the Mantova Campus, as envisaged by the Development Plan approved in March 2012, is striving towards increasingly greater specialisation of teaching and research activities conducted on campus on issues related to preservation and optimisation of the cultural and architectural heritage of the sites.
In support of this project, in March 2011, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, the Lombardia Region, Politecnico di Milano and the University of Mantova Foundation, with the aim of expanding research infrastructures and initiatives in favour of the students.
The UNESCO Chair is a step forward in the qualification of the Mantova Campus as a centre specialised in preservation and optimisation of cultural and architectural heritage, permitting the teaching and research activities to develop in a climate of international exchange and networking.
